Documenting my adventure, moving from the United States to Melbourne Australia with my husband (partner),our 5 and 3 year old sons, and our 2 kitties, who I will forever refer to as “Ex-pat cats.” Here is my account of the differences in culture, language, food, and just day-to-day life.

  1. Hey, I saw you on Suz in Oz’s comments. I’m in Sydney with 3 & 4 year old boys.. I’m going to read your blog.. right…now.

  2. I’m so with you!!! We got a package from home today and it had a bag of Cheerios. I too was so excited about it! My kids were loving the pop tarts. I moved to Melbourne in November with my husband and three kids.

  3. Welcome to Melbourne! I just started reading this blog tonight but it’s great. I’m a Melburnian so if you ever have any questions I would be happy to help you. Just leave a question on any random artical you like if you have any. Bye!

  4. Hi Dani,
I found your blog on a link to expats and thought I would write a note. I’m also an American in Melbourne. I’m here with my husband (aka partner) and 8 month old daughter. We’ve been here just under two years and plan to be here for AT LEAST another year. We have a blog as well – address http://www.eandedownunder.blogspot.com.
Maybe we should meet up for a cuppa???

  5. Hello,

Enjoyed reading your blogs starting many months ago. I check in for updates every now and then. We live in Las Vegas but are planning to move to Australia. From our reading we think we will like Melbourne best and end up settling there. My oldest two kids (not kids anymore really) are ages 18 (daughter) and 20 (son) and are interested in many opportunities they have found in Australia. My youngest (daughter) is almost 13. My husband works at home and can work anywhere there is internet. I have one question for you. Do I remember correctly that you had some “must have” boxes shipped right away when you moved there? And then you shipped more boxes later with a slower service? What shipping company did you use to ship those quicker “must have” boxes. We are starting to pack now and going through everything. We have been planning this for two years so am getting excited that we are getting closer to this happening.

    Thank you,

  7. Hi.
My name is Mourad. I’m french.
I’ve created a brand new website for expats. There is a section where users can post their blog address.
For the moment it’s only for people that live (have lived) in Australia, Canada, France and USA.
I’ve looked on google to find expat blogs and that’s how i’ve found yours.

I thought that maybe you would be interested in submitting your link. Of course it’s totally free. You can create a free account in 30 seconds although it’s not mandatoray to create an account to submit your link but recommanded if you want to update your information when you want.

I hope to see your blog listed on my website soon.

    Best regards

Mourad (moving to Australia in one month)

  8. Hi, I came across your blog today as I was searching for advices for moving to Austrlia. We live in US still and my husband was presented with an opportunity to move to Australia thisnpast week. We have three young children, age 3,1, and 7 month. I certainly will look into your blogs for some advices.

  9. Thank you for your blog! I am moving from NJ to Melbourne in 3 weeks with my 3 year old and 18 month old. My husband will be on a project for approx 18 months. Your info has helped my research immensely, perhaps even inspiring me to become a blogger myself. I look forward to more insight. Any other important advice? Thank you, again.

  10. Hi…just found your blog. My husand, 19 year old daughter and I are moving to Melbourne in the next couple of months. Curious what suburb do you live in. We want to be close to the CBD but I’d love to be close to the beach as well…any thoughs?

  11. Hi, just came across your blog while googling “Bed Bath & Beyond” (lol)
I live in Sydney and have always wanted to move to America. How did you find the move from the states to Aus? What do you think are the main differences?

I have no current way into the states as the government doesn’t see myself as a “preferred citizen” so I’m stuck in Aus for now 😦

Love the blog by the way, rather insightful 🙂

  12. Hi there! I’m so glad to find your blog. A few other awesome expat blogs I’ve come across have ended their journeys. I’m just starting mine next month and I’ve begun blogging about it http://stumbledownunder.com. I look forward to reading more from you (and catching up on your archives).

    • Hi Cosette! Thanks, I appreciate your comment, glad you found me! Best of luck with your move, I’ll be sure to follow along with your Aussie Adventure 🙂

  13. Hello! My husband and I may have an opportunity to spend some time in Melbourne in the future and when I started to look for information I found your blog. I’m so glad I did! 🙂 I love reading about your time in Melbourne. We have two small children too (both are 3) and I am curious as to what suburb you lived in? It sounds like you all really enjoyed it there.

I saw that you recently moved back to the states. Enjoy your time in your new home and best of luck!

  14. Danielle,

Hi! I subscribe to your feed, and I read your posts from my Google Reader. They are well written! I sometimes think CHE had something to do with that…remember the English Writing Lab once each week? haha I teach now, and I think that our high school should add writing lab for our students!

I just wanted to reach out and say hello. I no longer blog; but I still enjoy reading others work! I esp. enjoy yours

    Nicole Zappile

    • Hi Nicole! Thanks for your kind words 🙂

  15. Hi there, Danielle. Just started reading your blog, and I really dig it. I’m heading to Australia next week for the first time and am planning on doing a little blogging and reporting myself while I’m there. You’ve definitely set the bar pretty high.

Thanks for the great reads and great inspiration!
