6 July

For 34 years of my life July meant SUMMER. It meant humidity, frizzy hair, catching fireflies in glass jars, going to get ice cream sundaes at Friendly’s with my mom. When I was a kid I spent my summers in daycamps and eventually sleepaway camp, spending my days at the lake, only going indoors to eat and sleep.

Now, July = winter in Melbourne. This is my third full winter here and it is still boggling my mind. Windy rainy gray days with temps in the 40’s and 50’s (f.) Scarves, hoodies, gumboots, indoor activities and chili for dinner. Throw blankets are a hot commodity and the beach is empty.

I wonder if winter in July would ever feel normal?
