150th Running of the Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup 2010

We were invited pretty last minute to go to the Melbourne Cup with one of Craig’s vendors, and who are we to say no? (I had already bought a dress!)

We were to meet everyone at 8:30am to board the boat on our way to Flemington Raceway. We made our way through the grounds and loads of people to the Bird Cage- an area described as ” the premium marquee enclosure at Flemington Racecourse – the enclosure where celebrities, entrepreneurs and the creme de la creme of society watch the Melbourne Cup and party. The Melbourne Cup is an attraction with more than 100,000 spectators from all walks of life, but the luxurious Melbourne Cup birdcage is only open to a select few guests of race sponsors and VRC full members. The Melbourne Cup birdcage suite offers sponsorship options for companies including race naming rights, national TV exposure, on-course signage and branding, and executive privileges and special ticketing.” (from races.com.au.)

We became friendly with some of the other couples there, even exchanged numbers with one couple who have 2 boys around our boys ages, we plan to get together with them soon. One woman I met took me around on a celebrity hunt. She was pointing out an actor from City Homicide, a singer, and we even got to chat with two footy players. I had no clue who any of them were, but it was still fun.

The best part? The winning horse of the Cup is called “Americain.”
